As of Patch NW.25.20140909a.3, the coins stack to 1,000 and can be discarded.

Treasure from a dragon's hoard has special significance to the Cult of the Dragon. Many of their rituals require such treasure. If the Cult of the Dragon is to be stopped, this precious commodity will be required in abundance.

Dragon Hoard Coins can be donated to the Tiamat Hoard Reclamation event to affect the fit and improve the rewards gained from facing Tiamat.
