The following documentation is transcluded from Template:Walkthrough/doc (edit):

This template places content within an invisible indented box. If no content is present, it displays a box telling users they can help by adding one. It has alternate usages where it displays a link to another page, which would be useful if a walkthrough is or will be particularly long. In this case, it can display a header with a link back to the quest page.

{{quest step}} only works as expected inside this template, however.

Standard usage (when the walkthrough is on the quest page):

==Walkthrough==
{{walkthrough|
content
}}

Which shows:

content

Usage (on the walkthrough page when a walkthrough is on its own dedicated page):

{{walkthrough|header=yes|page=quest page name|title=quest title
content
}}

The parameter page is optional as long as the quest isn't disambiguated, meaning it doesn't include "(quest)" or doesn't match the quest name exactly. The parameter title is optional if the walkthrough page is named after the quest title followed by "(walkthrough)".

Usage (on the quest page when the walkthough is on its own decided page):

==Walkthrough==
{{walkthrough|link=yes|page=quest title (walkthrough)}}

The parameter page is optional as long as the quest isn't disambiguated, meaning it doesn't include "(quest)" or doesn't match the quest name exactly. You can use this even if the walkthrough page doesn't exist, which makes sense if you know the walkthrough will be particularly long when it is written. This will cue in other editors that it shouldn't be placed on the main quest page.

The typical way quest walkthroughs are formatted is like this:

{{walkthrough|
{{quest step|
*text shown for this step in the quest monitor in the HUD for this step
}}
*first instruction
*second instruction
**sub-instruction or important information about this step

{{quest step|
*when the text is updated in the HUD for this quest, place the new text here
}}
*first instruction
*second instruction
}}

...with as many steps and instructions as needed. This shows up as follows:

  • text shown for this step in the quest monitor in the HUD for this step
  • first instruction
  • second instruction
    • sub-instruction or important information about this step
  • when the text is updated in the HUD for this quest, place the new text here
  • first instruction
  • second instruction
