Tieflings are one of the playable races in Neverwinter since launch.
Description[ | ]
Tieflings are a race haunted by a dark and sinister bloodline. Their devilish appearance often leads to distrust from their human neighbors, forcing many tieflings to rely on cunning and guile to survive. They tend to be excellent rogues. Their infernal heritage leaves them predisposed toward magic, so many become powerful wizards.
Many tieflings consider Neverwinter to be their home. They will fight for her, hoping not just to protect the city, but also earn the trust of the other citizens of Neverwinter.
Origin[ | ]
During ancient times, there was a human empire called Bael Turath. As is with all the kingdoms, it expanded magnificently and then it started decaying slowly as rebellions took its toll on the large empire. In order to consolidate his power, a mad king made a secret pact with the devil himself. In payment of souls of its citizens, the devil would grant the nobles immense infernal powers. In a ceremony called BloodMoon Ritual, the king made sure that the Nobles houses of Bael Turath made a pact with the devil. Those who refused were put to death.
These Nobles changed in appearance as horns, tails and facial spikes appeared on their red skins due to infernal taint. With this power, the empire of Bael Turath started expanding again and became a magnificent empire until the Dragonborn empire of Arkhosia under a great dragon challenged them. Under the conflict that ensued, both nations were destroyed due to constant wars. The decline was not quick, but gradual and due to attrition.
With the long passage of time, the taint that bound their ancestors does not hold the Tiefling anymore. The infernal pact has become weak and no longer can influence the Tieflings unless it is renewed. However some effects of taint still remain. It is easier for a Tiefling to renew its infernal pact as compared to other races who have to form a new contract. Apart from that, the infernal deformation still affects the Tiefling and the taint is carried on in their future generations albeit in a diluted and dormant form. Thus a union between Tiefling and a human always results in a Tiefling man or woman carrying the taint.
Personality[ | ]
Tiefling are descendants of noble houses of a magnificent human empire which challenged the empire of great dragon on equal footing. Thus they are very proud of their heritage and self-reliant. In general, they believe more in themselves than any Astral deity. Due to the taint, they find it hard to be accepted easily but are not shunned by the society in general. Most tieflings are ambitious and end up either actively opposing the Ashmadai cultists or joining them.
Due to the rule of Ashmadai Cultists in Neverwinter prior to Neverember's conquest, there is an extra dimension to the personality of Tieflings in context of Neverwinter.
